Magna, in collaboration with the consulting team Think In Lean, is driving a transformation in the management of its construction projects in Portugal. Two industrial complexes on the outskirts of Lisbon, Lisboa Park for MERLIN PROPERTIES and Malveira Prime Logistics for Blackstrone/M7Real Estate, are serving as the setting for the implementation of the Lean Construction philosophy, with the aim of optimizing processes, reducing uncertainty, and increasing productivity.

What is Lean Construction?

Lean Construction is a management philosophy that seeks excellence through the elimination of waste in the construction process. It is defined by a management ideal based on principles and methods that aim to reduce uncertainty, improve collaboration, and maximize the value delivered to the client. In the specific case of the Lisbon construction projects, one of the most effective methodologies within Lean Construction is being applied: the Last Planner System (LPS). The term “Last Planner” refers to the people closest to the direct execution of the work: site managers, foremen, or team leaders. The essence of the system is simple, yet powerful: to actively involve those who actually perform the tasks in the planning process. By involving these “last planners,” their in-depth knowledge of the constraints, available resources, and sequence of activities on the construction site is leveraged. This empowers them to allocate tasks and resources based on the actual situation, generating delivery commitments that are truly achievable, unlike theoretical plans that are often thwarted.

Advantages we gain from implementing LPS

Implementing the Last Planner System (LPS) in Magna’s Lisbon projects offers tangible benefits:

Reduced uncertainty in planning: By being based on the actual knowledge of the construction team, plans are much more realistic and Robust.
Improved coordination and commitment between teams: Joint participation fosters accountability and adherence to agreements.
Boost productivity through continuous improvement: The system provides data that allows for the constant identification and elimination of inefficiencies.

How did we implement LPS?

The implementation of the LPS method has been characterized by an innovative and collaborative approach, starting with the creation of a Master Plan, actively involving the site managers of both projects.

At this stage, key indicators such as the Percentage of Plan Completed (PPC) are monitored, an essential metric that measures the reliability of the planning and the degree of compliance with what was agreed upon.

Finally, the ultimate goal of Lean Construction is continuous improvement.

The system encourages the entire organization, from management to operators, to actively participate in the pursuit of excellence and the systematic elimination of any waste, ensuring that small, consistent improvements translate into significant long-term results.
